Oxfam will host an International Conference on Food Security and Nutrition in Tbilisi

An event for experts, NGOs and civil society representatives

On June 15-16, 2016, at Courtyard Marriott in Tbilisi, 9:00-18:30, Oxfam will host an International Conference on Food Security and Nutrition in Tbilisi, Georgia. The event will bring together policy makers, civil society organisations, key stakeholders and international experts from the region and across Europe to discuss the current situation, challenges and best practices in food security and nutrition policy development that support local food production. European country representatives will showcase international models on developing inclusive policies and programmes for small holder farmers. International and local experts will present comprehensive approaches to developing healthy nutrition and food systems.

Oxfam has carried out extensive research through its European Union funded Project: Improving Regional Food Security in the South Caucasus through National Strategies and Smallholder Production. The conference participants will present some of the research findings on the topics of nutrition, food security monitoring and gender sensitive approaches to agriculture and nutrition relevant for the South Caucasus Region and beyond. The two day event will highlight challenges and best practices in policy development, implementation and monitoring to strengthen the support and commitment of civil society, policy makers and key stakeholders in food security and nutrition in the South Caucasus.

Background:

From 2013, Oxfam launched the 4-year European Union funded Project titled “Improving Regional Food Security through National Strategies and Smallholder Production in the South Caucasus”. Central to the project is the publication of gender sensitive food security and nutrition strategies in the South Caucasus. Food security is an important part of the agricultural policy framework and it represents successive social and economic policies that guarantee local food production and citizens’ access to healthy and diverse food.
